Of the six essential hardware functions we need to consider in How to Design a Hardware Set, this blog will cover hardware that seals the door.
Weatherstripping and thresholds are often overlooked as components of a hardware set. However, they are crucial components for the effective performance of doors. Weatherstripping seals gaps around doors, preventing the intrusion of weather elements like rain, wind, and drafts, contributing to energy efficiency and a comfortable indoor environment. Additionally, they act as barriers against noise, dust, and insects, enhancing overall insulation and cleanliness. Within the interior, a smoke seal impedes the flow of smoke. This is to aid other spaces close to the fire thus minimizing the damage incurred. It is often thought that a threshold is needed at each fire-rated opening. This is often not the case. The current fire & life safety designs allow for a ¾” gap at the bottom of the door. This gap allows for some balancing of pressure between each side of the door.
Thresholds play a pivotal role in preventing water infiltration, leveling flooring transitions, and adding durability to the door’s bottom.
Together, weatherstripping and thresholds ensure a secure, energy-efficient, and weather-resistant barrier, prolonging the lifespan of doors and creating more comfortable and protected indoor spaces.
